Engine ECU Test and Repair

Below is a sample of Engine Control Units that we can test, repair, program and or supply. We can offer re-code, re-program or plug and play (coded data and programming from old unit) option with most sale/exchange units. If you do not see the part you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact us and one of our friendly team will be glad to assist you.

Engine ECU common faults include CAN BUS communication errors, non start, ignition coil, injectors, accelerator pedal position sensor, O2 sensor, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, rough running, poor fuel consumption and more.

What is an ECU?

An engine control unit (ECU) also known as a engine control module (ECM) or powertrain control module (PCM) is a type of electronic control unit that is responsible for controlling a series of actuators on an internal combustion engine to ensure optimal engine performance and running conditions. It does this by reading multiple values from a multitude of sensors within the engine bay, interpreting the data using multidimensional performance maps and adjusting the engine actuators the maintain optimum performance.

Before the use of modern ECUs the air to fuel mixture, ignition timing, and idle speed were mechanically set and dynamically controlled by mechanical and pneumatic means.

Modern ECUs now use a microprocessor which processes all the electronic input values from the engine sensors in real-time and can adjust air to fuel ration, cam angles and ignition timing resulting in optimum engine performance and low emissions.

A cars computer can fail at anytime due a multitude of reasons such as component failure, electrical surges, vibrations and moisture or water ingress. If the ECU detects that a big problem has occurred it may switch the car into “limp mode” which is designed to keep the engine running but at reduced power to prevent any engine damage and to keep emissions low.

Great service and extremely knowledgeable. Completed repairs on an ABS unit that another company had told me couldn't be repaired. They also stayed in touch every step of the way.

What a life saver! I was restoring my Renault Clio Williams and had a water damaged ECU which meant the car was a non runner. It was really difficult to swap the ecu for another been an old vehicle and lots of variety in part numbers. Therefore had no choice in repairing the old unit. I tried a couple of large firms which turned me away as their equipment outdated it. Fortunately Shanes expertise was able to diagnose and fix mine using some new internal parts and circuit board repairs. Car is now fixed and I can carry on the restoration. Amazing service from start to finish!
